Concerns Regarding Proposed Closure of ASDB Tucson Campus

Letter of Concern re ASDB Tucson Campus Closure

On February 5, 2026, DRAZ sent the attached Letter of Concern to legal representatives of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, the Arizona Department of Education, and the Arizona Governor’s Office.

The letter outlines DRAZ’s concerns about potential violations of the rights of Arizona students with disabilities currently served by the Tucson campus of the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind (ASDB). ASDB is proposing to close its Tucson campus and relocate some, but not all, of the students currently served there to a smaller campus in another part of the city. Based on information shared by ASDB leadership in writing and in public forums, DRAZ is concerned that the proposed changes may leave current Tucson campus students who are blind/visually impaired, and current Tucson residential students, without an appropriate school placement next school year.

ASDB’s Governing Board will be discussing the proposed change to the Tucson campus at a Board meeting on February 5, 2026 at 4pm. You can access a livestream of the meeting here, or plan to attend in-person at the Phoenix Day School for the Deaf campus:

For information and advocacy tips regarding the rights of students with disabilities in the event of a school closure, consider registering for the Champions for Kids “School Closures” webinar on February 26, 2026 at 10am.

DRAZ will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates.
