988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Goes Live

Mental Health

On July 16, 2022, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline became available throughout Arizona and Nationwide. 988 is a three-digit phone number that offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can assist people experiencing a mental health crisis, a substance abuse crisis, thoughts of suicide, or any other kind of emotional distress. 988 replaces the 10-digit Lifeline number 1-800-273-TALK (8255), however, the 10-digit number will remain operational and will route calls to 988.

988 is a free and confidential service. Currently, live crisis center calling services are offered in English and Spanish, and Language Line Solutions is used for providing translation services for calls in over 250 other languages. Text and chat options are currently available in English only.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health or emotional crisis, help is available through 988. Just call or text 988 for assistance and you will be connected with a crisis counselor. You can also access 988 through an online chat. Information for people who are deaf or hard of hearing who need to access 988 is available. If you or someone you know is a veteran struggling with a mental health crisis, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline offers access to the Veterans Crisis Line. Just call 988, then press 1. The Veterans Crisis Line is also available by text at 838255, or access the online chat.
