New “know-your-rights” video series on Special Education

Education

DRAZ, in partnership with Good Point Creative and through support from the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, has developed two series of know-your-rights animated explainer videos relating to special education.

The first series of videos describes dispute resolution options available when families disagree with decisions made by a school regarding a student’s special education. The videos give guidance on how to decide which dispute resolution option is best for a given scenario and describe what to expect from each dispute resolution process. These videos provide students and their families with easy-to-understand explanations of their procedural safeguards, allowing families to better self-advocate and exercise their rights when it comes to special education.

The second video series provides information about school discipline. Although students with disabilities may be subject to school discipline, just like any other student, they do have legal rights to protect them from being disciplined for behaviors that are related to their disabilities. These videos discuss different types of school discipline and the rights students with disabilities have when facing disciplinary proceedings.

Both series of videos are available in English, Spanish, ASL, and include closed captioning. DRAZ encourages students and their families to review these videos to better understand their rights in the area of special education and invites our community partners to share these videos and spread the message about students’ rights.
